This sacred shrine, surrounded by the serene beauty of nature, beckons travelers and devotees to explore its history, unique location, and the legends that are etched in its very stones.

Location

The Bathu Temple is situated in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, India, in the quaint village of Bathu near Jawali. It takes around 1 hour 30 mins o reach Jawali from Dharamshala. Its remote location adds to its charm, as it is surrounded by the tranquil waters of the Maharana Pratap Sagar Lake, a reservoir formed by the Beas River. Accessible via boat, this temple offers a unique spiritual experience amidst the natural beauty of the Himalayan foothills.

The History Behind

This temple, with a significant connection to the Mahabharata, remains submerged in water for eight months each year. Comprising a cluster of six distinct temples, it becomes a part of the underwater world from July to February, emerging only between March and June.

Despite its extended submersion, the temple’s structure remains remarkably intact, thanks to its construction from a resilient stone known as ‘bathu.’ Carved figures of Goddess Kali and Lord Ganesha grace the stone exterior, while inside, you’ll encounter a statue of Lord Vishnu reclining on his divine serpent, Shesh Naag.
